How to Clean a Suede Couch

Microsuede and suede couches add a luxurious look to any living room. Without regular cleaning, though, these lush fabrics can start looking dingy. Since stains set quickly in both suede and microsuede fibers, the first step to maintaining these fabrics' original luster is to take care of stains immediately – before they set in. Beyond that, proper routine maintenance should keep your couch looking great for years to come. Just follow this simple 4-step cleaning process from the upholstery experts at ServiceMaster Clean to ensure your suede couches stay as stunning as the day you first sat in them.

Suede & Microsuede Cleaning Techniques

Step 1: Vacuum

Use a hand vacuum to collect any dust, debris or pet hair from the cushions. Vacuum in a crisscross pattern to free anything that has been trapped in the folds and nap of the fabric. Try to vacuum your couch at least once a month to keep the fabric smooth and clean.

Step 2: Brush

Brushing your couch removes dust and keeps suede from looking smashed or dull. Always use a suede brush or soft terry cloth – more abrasive brushes can cause scratches or permanent scarring. Revive the suede's nap by gently brushing it at least once a week.

Step 3: Remove Stains

You should use different cleaning techniques for suede and microsuede couches since one fabric is natural and the other is synthetic. Cleaning stains off of real suede is a delicate art, so you should always try to absorb wet stains before they set in. If liquid spills on your suede couch, don't panic. Get a clean, dry cloth and gently dab at the moisture to absorb as much liquid as possible. Lift straight up after dabbing to avoid pressing the liquid deeper into the fabric. Let the area dry completely, and then decide if further action is necessary. If you find stains on your microsuede couch, the best technique to remove them is to use white vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Pour a small amount of either liquid on a clean terry cloth. Be careful not to oversaturate the cloth since too much liquid can actually make the stain bigger. Gently rub the stain with the moist terry cloth in a crisscross pattern. Be careful not to use harsh motions that can damage your couch's nap. As with any cleaning solution, you should test a small area of the couch first to check for potential damage or discoloration. Read the manufacturer's care instructions to see which type of cleaner is safest for your couch. For dry stains that you can't remove with the techniques above, use a suede eraser (usually designed for shoes) or even a pencil eraser to gently rub them away. If that fails, you can try using a soft nail file or sandpaper. Afterward, brush the couch again to smooth the fibers back into place.

Step 4: Seek Help

Owning a suede couch requires tender loving care to keep it in good shape. If you vacuum, brush and remove stains as soon as you see them, your couch should last for years to come. Just remember – if you see a spill, clean it up immediately. The sooner you take care of spills, the more likely you are to avoid a stain. If you're unable to remove stains from your suede or microsuede couch alone, call the experts at ServiceMaster Clean.
